Cardboard, how can you tell if its acid-free or not?
I have several boxes and scrap cardboard pieces from various places. How can you tell if they are acid-free or not?
I like to use them in art projects and other stuff, but don't know if they will be ok if I paint them or glue them to make them into various things.
Thank you for your help.
Cardboard is NOT acid free. If you want to use it for a project you want to last a long time (especially photos or papers), don't use cardboard. After a prolonged period of time it will leave an oily residue that will soak into any paper that is laying against it. I was a custom framer for 3 years, and those who brought in old pictures that were framed with cardboard backing were yellowed and nearly ruined. We used a special foamcore that was acid free. If you're not putting it up against a paper of some kind, you could use it no problem...you just might want to put some sort of finish (varnish) on it to prevent it from discoloring after so many years. If you need more help, just let me know...but I hope I gave you at least a little bit already. 0=)
