Who do you think the most impressive ancient historical figure was?
I would say Ramses II or Alexander the great (when I say ancient I mean pre-1000 AD).
Socrates predated the Hellenistic period
Between the two you mentioned, I would say Alexander the Great aka Alexander III, hands down. I mean, he conquered most of the known world. He may as well claim the title of the greatest military leader the world has ever known, especially because his empire stretched from Gibraltar to the Punjab, and he made Greek the lingua franca of his world.
Other Impressive Ancient Historical Figures (In No Particular Order):
Hippocrates: the father of modern day medicine who started the Koan style of medicine that focused more on prognosis and treatment than diagnosis. He is said to be the first to discern between medicine and philosophy, arguing that illness is not of a supernatural origin. The Hippocratic Oath that all doctors say is named after him for his schools' strict professionalism.
Herodotus: the first historian proper, and therefore known as the father of history.
Archimedes of Syracuse: a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer, determined the exact value of pi and is also known for his strategic role in ancient war and the development of military techniques.
Siddhattha Gautama: a philosopher, teacher, and religious leader--the founder of Buddhism.
Thiruvalluvar: author of Thirukkural, masterpiece of Tamil literature with the highest and purest expressions of human thought.
Muhammad: the founder and holy prophet of the Muslim faith. He united many tribes in Arabia.
Achilles (if he existed): the legendary hero of the Iliad. Son of a sea nymph, Thetis, and the King of the Myrmidons, Peleus.
Cyrus the Great aka Cyrus II: founder of the Persian Empire who conquered the Median Empire and Lydia, becoming Persian king by 546 B.C. 7 years later, Cyrus defeated the Babylonians and liberated the Jews.
Attila the Hun: a fierce king and general whose empire stretched from Scandinavia to Armenia.
Scipio Africanus: the Roman commander who defeated Hannibal at the Battle of Zama in the Second Punic War.
Hannibal: the leader of the Carthaginian forces against Rome in the Second Punic War. He almost overpowered Rome and, thus, was considered Rome's greatest enemy.
Augustus a.k.a. Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus: an autocrat who ended many civil wars within the Roman nation causing a 200 year era of peace known as the Pax Romana.
Constantine I a.k.a. Constantine the Great: emperor of all Rome who is known for being the first to embrace Christianity openly and promote freedom of religion for all.
Julius Caesar: the most powerful general in all of Rome who took the position of Imperator.
Socrates: a philosopher who developed the Socratic method, a philosophical method of question and answer that is designed to get to the heart of matters.
Plato: wrote many books on philosophy, most famous of which are the Apology and the Republic. He developed Platonism and founded the first school of higher learning in the western world, known as the Academy.
Aristotle: a student at Plato's Academy and world renown philosopher who tutored Alexander the Great for 7 years at the request of Philip of Macedon, Alexander's father.
