cleaning bronze (or copper?) statue?
I inherited a statue of a shepherd, probably of Belgian or French or Dutch origin, from around or even before 1920. It is around 50 cm (around 20") tall. I think it is probably made of bronze, but it could be copper. It has not been looked after very well, it's dusty and dirty. How can I clean it? Or should I leave well alone and check with antique dealers - I am looking at selling it.
If you're planning to sell it, don't clean it. If you're going to hang on to it for a while, wipe it over with a damp cloth to get rid of the dust. Don't remove the build-up of grime (patina) or you'll halve the value.
