I will be doing pastel work soon ..... in about 5 weeks there's a class starting, OMG~HURRAY! So already purchased a really expensive brand of soft pastels + cheapo student brand. Tonight will go online somewhere to get some nice pastel paper [different sizes, different colors}. --Bought smudgers and all that [and eraser]. Gosh, I can hardly wait!! And chose a composition already--an antique painting that inspired me enough to use many ideas for a larger painting that I will be doing but I think it will take a couple of months to complete it since I am new at this and even tho a beginner at pastels still want it to look professional.
HOW LONG did you notice a big improvement w/your pastel work if you kept up at it?
You are now talking about my favorite medium. It shouldn't take you that long to master soft pastels.
As long as you have some art under your belt already. I use it all the time for doing portraits. And once you get the feel for using them you will love them
I did a copy of The creation of Adam in soft pastels and it is now hanging up in Rome, in the Vatican I'm told. So lots of luck to you using the new medium and I'm sure you will like using them.
