Steampunk ideas & info?
So I enjoy working with wire and glass beads and other findings along with taking things apart to see how they work lol and have come accross steampunk. I think its something really awesome and I want to give it a go.
Are there objects I could take apart that would offer some good peices? (Eg, watches)
Where can I find objects to take apart? I have a few watches I've collected over time, and I've tried the town dump and recycling depot with no luck. They have a no picking rule. I was sort of mad at the recycling depot because they didnt agree that it would be a form of recycling.
I also dont like wasting things that still serve a good purpose be it antiques that still work or are asthetic furnishing lol or TV remotes or cameras that still work.
Any other help would be greatly appreciated, thanks
ebay is your best friend. you can buy antique watch movements in lots, you can buy old typewriter keys, you name it, its on there. i recently bought 6 georgous old watch movements, with faces, and several of them still tick, all for like, $16! plus there is ALWAYS someone selling gears and stuff, in little tins by weight.
another good place to check is pawn shops and jewelery repair places. pawn shops are full of crap people never come and claim, and jewelery stores sometimes sell things that no one came in to claim for a lower price, so if someone dropped off a watch and never came to get it, then thats a watch for you.
get yourself a good pair of plyers tho, the little bits in the middle of the gears are very sharp, so plyers will help you take them out without stabbing your hands.
check stores like goodwill too. those are sort of hit and miss but they are always worth a look. they dont have a LOOT of antiques, but usually when you find something there, its awesome
if your into antiqueing things yourself, go check out hardware stores and look for those ornate keyholes.
or ask grandma and grandma if they have anything they dont want anymore...
for stuff to stick things to, idk if you have heard of the Vintaj Brass company but they have some of the most pretty and steampunky jewelery parts i have ever seen. here is their website. http://www.vintaj.com/ it lists several locations that sell their products, both internet and in stores by state. http://www.fusionbeads.com/ is my favorite because they have free shipping and have discounts if you order certain amounts. i cant say enough good things about Vintaj, i found them in a craft store a few months ago and it was like finding a goldmine
