Can I make an applique out of any piece of fabric?
I am wanting to take a cute animal print fabric and cut out pieces to makes appliques, and then sew (or fuse) them onto a plain bumper pad. Can you make appliques out of thin cotton fabric? It is possible to make it no sew and have a professional- looking result? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
What a fun idea!
Just buy some iron-on fusible interfacing for making appliques. Wash, dry, and iron the cute print fabric first to make sure it has already shrunk before you use it. Iron the fusible webbing onto the the cute pieces first. Then cut them out, peel off the backing, and iron onto the bumper fabric. You can make it look more finished by going around the edges with fabric paint from a squirt bottle. It can make the designs show up and help to seal the edges.
You might even buy some thin, decorative cording to hot glue around the edges of your cut out shapes.
It would probably look a little nicer and be more secure if your stiched around the edges, but it could look really cute without it.
Two areas of concern just to keep in mind:
1. Make sure that the applique is on securely. If your child is able to peel the pieces off, he or she could choke.
2. Make sure that you can iron on the bumper. It may not be suitable to iron it if the foam isn't heat-resistant.
Good luck!
