Were axes used more than swords as combat weapons in Medieval Europe, Middle East or Mesopotamia?
I know that given their versatile nature as both tools and weapons, axes were easier to come by than swords. But were they used more often as weapons by the Medieval European or Mesopotamian or Middle eastern armies than swords were?
Axes were far more available and far more used. In many societies, the sword was a mark of noble or knightly rank, and the common man was forbidden by law to own or carry one. It's rather, the medieval equivalent of "Impersonating an officer" is today. In addition, swords were fairly costly as well.
Thus common people would carry, axes, clubs, pikes or other weapons.
