What's the Best Book About Medieval Life?
I'd like to find a book that describes every day life in medieval times. Not dates and facts, but more social trends, daily existence, i.e. the interesting stuff. I know Timeline by Michael Crichton presented an interesting fictional account....do any medieval scholars have any reccomendations?
Daily Life in Medieval Times by Frances and Joseph Gies is a book that definitely describes the book you are looking for. It's not a fictional story or anything, but it's still a good read. It's about 350 pages long and is neatly presented so that learning about this time is much more interesting. It is illustrated and was formerly three books: Life in a Medieval Castle, Life in a Medieval City, and Life in a Medieval Castle. At the moment, it is unavailable at Barnes and Noble's website (the first link below goes directly to the book). You may want to check out the local Barnes & Noble if you have one. If not, you can always get it from amazon.com (the second link), though it would be cheaper if you could get it in the B&N store (I paid about $15 rather than almost $28). Hope this helps!
