What do the stars on military decorations/medals signify?
Like the Bronze and silver stars and the arrowheads
they are called "devices"
for example a single bronze star device denotes second and subsequent awards of a decoration. , a single star device is worn in lieu of five gold or bronze service stars. the bronze arrowhead denotes participation in parachute, glider or amphibious landing or assault. (have never personally seen this)
basically if you are awarded a army achievement medal (AAM), then later on in your career you are awarded another AAM, you would place a single bronze star over the original ribbon, instead of adding a second, identical ribbon to your rack.
