unknown Catholic artifact, help please?
A box with a wall hanger, from a Church, 24" H 15" wide, 4" deep. guessing it is 100 years old, very well made, porcelain Mary holding crucified Jesus inside sealed glass, this constitutes about 80% of the box, at the bottom is a picture of the last supper sealed under glass, and this is a small compartment which holds a crucifix (plastic and bronze) and a number of mostly Italian 1920-50 prayer cards. also inside is a card which reads 'A remembrance of my ordination to the holy priesthood and first solemn mass' F.A. Demong, O.M.I. dated 1938. If this sounds familiar, or you know where to get some info. on Catholic artifacts, pls answer.
P.S. I apoligise, thought I could post a picture but I don't know how, sorry.
OMI means that the card came from a priest of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. It's an Italian order, but they have priests in Canada.
Likely this was a privately owned piece. Each element was brought together and framed in this special box, probably custom-made. It might also have been the property of a priest (Father Demong, perhaps, or a friend of his). Then it was donated to a parish upon the death of the owner. It might have been donated as individual items and the parish had all the artifacts collected and put in this display box.
If the statuette isn't mounted, you could look to see who the make was and maybe track a purchase that way.
