I saw a youtube video a couple years ago where a man took a canvas, put some sort of clay on it, then took all these different home based things like doily's, coins, keys, pipes, you name it, and he pressed them into the clay. He let it sit for a while and then he painted it with like three different colors. He just rubbed the paint on with his hand and wiped it off with a rag to give a distresssed look. It was amazing and looked great. I dont think it was polymer clay because he never baked it. Oh I think he used some kind of glaze over it too. I cant remember but I looked for the video and couldn't find it. I also googled it and didnt see anything like that. Can anyone help me and tell me what this is called and what this guy is using?
Sounds like a thick gesso to me, and as I was reading your question I was thinking that he'd have to glaze it... and sure enough, you said he glazed it. Either way, I'd use gesso and then once that dried I'd glaze with a gel medium. The gel medium would depend on what type of paint you would use, acrylic or oil.
