Dutch travel experts -- What's a good day trip from Amsterdam to see old-fashioned Holland?
Hello,
I'm in the US and planning to visit the Netherlands with my family with children 12 and 8, staying in Amsterdam three nights. I'd like to try one day to see the countryside -- you know, windmills, canals, some quiet, maybe tulips and people in clogs if they still bother -- and I'm wondering if you have a tip on a good day trip.
I am considering Delft, Kinderdijk, and Leerdam.
Do those seem manageable -- to go and come back in one day?
Also:I could sleep in the countryside, but I want to take the fast train to Paris the next day. My understanding is that I can only catch it in Amsterdam, is that right?
Thank you very much
No, you can catch the train (to Paris) in Amsterdam, Schiphol, The Hague (HS station), Rotterdam and Roosendaal. Delft would be close to The Hague, Leerdam and Kinderdijk the closest to Rotterdam.
De Zaanse schans would probably be the place to go for you, http://www.zaanseschans.nl/ It's almost exactly what you described. The location is pretty good, it's close to Amsterdam and you could get back within 45minutes. Their website will tell you how to get there.
Kinderdijk is another option, though a little harder to reach by public transport. http://www.kinderdijk.com/index.htm
I would not advice to sleep in the countryside, there is really nothing to do at night in Kinderdijk. Just book a hotel in Rotterdam (a city just as big as Amsterdam) and have a good time!
Delft is interesting, but it's not countryside. Delft is a small city between the suburban areas of Rotterdam and The Hague. Both cities are only 10minutes away by train. Delft has a great history, from the murder of the previous monarch 'Willem van Oranje' in 1584 to the industrial revolution in the 19th century.

Leerdam isn't really that interesting IMHO. It's would take at least 2hours to get there and it's really not worth the trip.
Volendam is always a great trip for tourists. http://www.vvv-volendam.nl/nl/welcome/
Remember that places you are looking for are not realistic. The old windmills are (in general) not used anymore, canals are not everywhere, tulips can only be found in certain places (but they don't have the windmills or the canals) and people (in general) only wear clogs to please the tourists. So, the places listed above are a little cheesy, except for Delft, they are all tourist oriented, but it could give you an impression about life on the countryside more than 100 years ago
