Do we really care who wins silver or bronze?

Or is it just to console the loser of gold?

I saw the ski cross competition and one of the contenders (I think he was favorite to win the gold) fell behind to third place early on. So to close the gap he decided to take a risk and catch more air on one of the jumps or something like that and he crashed upon landing. Later he was asked why he did that and he said he knew he had the bronze but he wanted the gold.

Isn't that what it is all about? No one strives for second, third, fourth place, etc. So when we say "good job for your silver", are we just blowing smoke up their butts? No one remembers silver and bronze winners.
Newsflash for you: that's not clever or original.
You remember them because they are fresh in your mind.

Silver and bronze is still something that winners should be proud of. If you won silver or bronze in the Olympics, would you feel disappointed with it? Most likely not. It's not easy to win any of those medals.
