Would a Harpocrates statue be found in an egyptian tomb?
I have a statue given as a gift of the Egyptian government and I don't know who it is. I think it is Harpocrates, the Egyptian god of silence. It is about 6" in high, seated, although the "seat" was broken off before I received it and he is wearing an Atef Crown and is made out of Bronze. Would something like this be found in an egyptian tomb?
Harpocrates, is the Greco-Roman name given to Horus. In Osirian theology, where Horus is the son of Isis and Osiris. The royal part of his nature took on an additional mythical dimension principally concerned with opposing the chaotic elements. As the rightful successor to Osiris ,Horus stood for world order, while Seth (Osiris' brother with who he fought many battles )stood for disorder. In the Greco-Roman period, finally Horus assumed all the magical and mythical elements of the kingship.superseding the actual ruler in that capacity.
Since it was such an important gift, and it is an actual antiquity, there is no reason that your very statue may not have been placed in a tomb or mortuary temple of the era.Or it may have stood in an honoured place in a home or place of business.Wouldn't it be fascinating to know who actually cherished
it
You are very lucky to have been given such a treasure and I'm sure you treasure it.
I answer this with just a twinge of envy.
