I've found I can get the asset inventory list submitted to probate but is there a way to find out how much the investments ira/stocks were? These were left to a beneficiary and not the estate therefor do not have to be included in the inventory of assets. Unfortunately there is no will and some shadiness is going on.
If you are talking about the state of California, you can go to the county court house. There you can look up the case number on a computer terminal, based on the decedent's name. Then you fill out a request form to inspect that file and you are allowed to inspect it and a clerk will even make you copies of any document if necessary (at a price of course). Probate records are public records. These files include the decedent's will specifying any bequests. But just because a specific asset is left to a named beneficiary, does NOT eliminate it from the inventory of assets. Only joint tenancy properties would not be listed.
Don't run away with any documents in that file though. That would be a criminal offense. I presume other states have similar procedures.
