What ethnic group does people from India belong to?
Although there is no biological evidence of "race", ethnicity is defined in dictionary as below:
"An ethnic group or ethnicity is a population of human beings whose members identify with each other, either on the basis of a presumed common genealogy or ancestry or recognition by others as a distinct group, or by common cultural, linguistic, religious, or physical traits. "
This question is asked in surveys, census, and many application forms.
P.S. There is no biological evidence of "RACE", for 99.9 percent of all people are alike in DNA make-up despite their appearance.
New studies that have shown 10% variant of the genes in human population, does not elaborate on different ethnic populations. Which means that 10% of population of the same ethnic group could be different or not!
India is an ancient country. Suppose if 5000 years from now there would be a new place, where people would migrate. What would you call the immigrants from USA? Most definitely the immigrants from USA cannot be classified as Americans, when ethnicity is in question. Why? Americans are people from USA, Canada, Mexico, and South America. Classifying people from India as Asians maybe correct regionally, but does not account for their ethnic group.
The immigrants from USA cannot be classified as US Americans either. Why? US American is a nationality not an ethnic group. Similarly, when it comes to ethnicity, a person from India cannot be classified as Indian. Hence, Indian is a nationality not an ethnic group.
According to the US Department of States, the people from India can be categorized in these ethnic groups: "Indo-Aryan 72%, Dravidian 25%, Mongoloid 2%, and Other 1%".
Since my great grandparents were from India and I am a 3rd generation US citizen, I always use the information from the US Department of States to fill the ethnicity part of any application.
