What natural methods can we use to discourage grass growing after sod removal?
As per my question. Would landscape fabric be our best option, or is there something more economical that someone can do? We have a large area we are going remove sod from. Thanks Folks!
Whatever you do- don't use Round-Up, the stuff is toxic, NOT NATURAL and becoming closer and closer to becoming outlawed everyday because research indicating problems to wildlife.... the legislation has been back and fourth but thanks to lobbying the stuff remains on the market... anyway-
If you plan to let the area sit fallow for a while you can place sheets of black plastic over the area which is fairly cheap. This process is known as "soil solarization" and is used to kill large areas of weeds or any other vegatation without using chemicals. It would also certainly discourage any growth from an area of removed sod.
It isn't very sightly though and the plastic should be removed when you do plant something in the area.
This is a fairly common practice among orgainic and natural gardening. Many landscapers like this method too because the material is cheap, very effective and can be used over and over... some like to use pond liners as it is more durable.
Use black so that the soil gets a good heat up...
