Can gravel and fabric be used on a newly planted rose border?
You could but it wouldn't look good and the roses won't take kindly to it.
The gravel reflects the heat and weedmat is now not considered successful as it blocks out too much water. Roses like lots of food and water and the soil needs to constantly refreshed with organic matter for them to grow really well. With time weeds grow in the gravel from seeds blown in so it only stops the weeds initally from underneath. Don't waste your time or money use a good organic mulch, thick enough to keep the garden moist and the weeds buried.
