little red balls growing on my boots?
i just unpacked my bag in which my boots and some clothing have been for a week
my clothes are fine, but my leather boots have mold growing on the leather and little red balls growing around the lace eyelets.
why did these happen (it wasn't particularly damp) and how do i get rid of both?
will bleach remove polish as well or fade the colour of the leather?
Generally speaking, bleach will kill mold and mildew, but I don't think that I would try it on leather boots, only as a last resort. I would wipe them down with a rag dampened with a little warm water, just to get the mold and "red things" off, get rough, you need to get all of the visible mold off. Take the laces out, I would just buy new ones, but they need to be washed and dried at least. Then the boots need to dry thoroughly. Set them in a breezy spot, prop the boot tops open so air can circulate as much as possible. Give it a few days. Then treat them with a good leather creme, or suede product, check the shoe polish section, or hunting/camping area of your local store. If the insoles are a little smelly, I would dust them with an athletes foot powder, thats a great anti-fungal. If the insoles are seriously smelly, your could try a quick spritz of Lysol spray, and let them dry well again. Good Luck.
