Ways to communicate back home from Afghanistan?
I'm deploying in august 09 to afghanistan. From experiences ones, what are the quickest ways of communication over there? Are we allowed cell phones or internet? If yes do we get the cell phone over there or have it setup for international calling back in the states? Internet, does the bases have wifi or is it strictly internet cafes? Are we allowed on yahoo messenger to get on the webcam?
This is what's gonna make the deployment a lot more pleasant. Thanks in advance for any friendly answers.
a cell phone would have to be purchased locally. they are expensive to maintain and service sucks. satellite phones are even MORE expensive. any local )stateside) one woudl be astronomically expensive even with international plans. do you REALLY wanna spend all your Family sep and HFP/IDP on phone bills?! ( only slightly exaggerating here.. )
depending on FOB you could have all the comforts of home. or nothing.
DH is currently IA...not in Afghanistan or Iraq but elsewhere.. he has WiFi although since a bazillion people are sharing it can be spotty service. usually have no problem IMing, and often are able to swing Voice and webcam too.
most MWR comps are restricted..they do not have webcams built in.. sometimes voice is not activated either. But f you bring your own laptop you should be fine.
I get daily communication..anywhere from the 10 minute Morale calls to over an hour with web/voice. but he is also 7 or 8 hours ahead so after his 12 hour day he doesn't always stay on very long.
