Gastropods From
Why are Bivalves all found offshore?

We're doing a field trip report for a rocky shore. We found lots of gastropods, crustaceans and bivalves. But all the bivalves are found near the shore line, never far away from the waves. Why?

A lot of bivalves are burrowers. The bury themselves in the mud and just leave a little siphon stick out. They are definitely present and in high numbers away from the wave zone, it is just that you do not see them as easily as surface dwellers like starfish, snails, and crabs and stuff.

What you find on the rocky shore are the species that either have been disturbed by the waves and exposed to be found, or the species that like to attach to rock and resist being moved by the waves.
