How do you clean a handmade felt Christmas stocking?
I have this old felt applique Christmas stocking. It is very old and has beads sewn onto it. The stocking has several different colors but the cuff of the stocking is white. The white cuff has yellowed with age. I was wondering if I could clean the stocking and get this yellowish stain off and how would be the best way to clean it. What worries me is that this stocking has a lot of red felt on it and I'm afraid it the red is going to bleed onto the white. Any suggestions on how to clean this would be appreciated.
Here's the thing, the stocking also has an angel on it. She has white wings and I can't take off her wings like I could the cuff. Besides, that looks like it would be very hard to do. I'm afraid to take it to a dry cleaner for fear the beads and sequins could be destroyed.
This is tricky. These days, felt is more likely to be colourfast. If it's old though, that could be a problem. Wet a very small corner of the red part and then take a piece of white fabric and gently rub on the red felt. If the white fabric becomes red, then it's going to bleed onto the white. I'm not sure that the yellow will come off, especially if the felt had any wool in it; wool yellows with age. If it's possible to take the cuff off before you wash the rest, you could try that and then re-stitch it.
