Knights Templar and Freemasonry whats the difference between them?
I've seen almost all of these shows on the History Channel, National Geographic, and the Discovery Channel about the Knights Templar and Freemasonry. I know that many of the early leaders of our country including several signers of the Declaration of Independence where Freemasons. I also know that the Knights Templar began in Europe as a group of fighting monks. What are some of the other difference between them? Also what are some of the things they have in common?
The original medieval Order of Knights Templar were originally called the “Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon”, they took oaths of poverty and obedience and were protectors of Holy Land pilgrims against the Muslims. They were founded around 1118 or 1119.
As time went on, the Knights took on a military stance, displaying a red cross on white tunics. They were known to hold their ground, never retreating or asking for mercy unless they became outnumbered by three or more.
The medieval Order of the Knights Templar were officially dissolved by the Council of Vienne and their property transferred to the Knights of St John (Hospitallers) - at this point they became extinct.
Freemasonry on the other hand has, since its formal inception with the uniting of four London based lodges in 1717, sought an answer for its roots in history. The speculations have been as varied as the Freemasons who have offered them. Among the speculations have been the Masons of Ancient Egypt, The Roman Building Guilds, Solomon's workmen and a host of others.
In the early 1700's a new theory was presented for Masonic history and that was, that the Freemasons began in the medieval deserts of the Levant with the Crusaders and Knights Templar. The responsibility for this theory lies with two different men, Andrew Michael Ramsay and the German Baron Karl Von Hundt.
Seperate from the ancient original Knights Templar is also an international philanthropic masonic order. In the 1700s when freemasonry became public they began to incorporate symbols and traditions of the medieval Knights Templar. The original medieval Order of Knights Templar was established after the First Crusade, and existed from approximately 1118 to 1312. There is absolutely no historical evidence to link the medieval Knights Templar and Masonic Templarism.
