Take a good look at the type of shell your snails have. Are they spiraled? Does the spiral end in a tip that sticks out or does it end in the middle of the shell? Are the shells round or oval? What color are the shells?
If the snails look like this: http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&q=pond+snail then they'll get no bigger than a half inch or a little more than a centimeter.
If they look like this: http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&q=apple+snails then they can get as big as your fist or a softball or five inches or ten or fifteen centimeters or so.
If they look like this: http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&q=ramshorn+snail then they'll get to be an inch big or two to three centimeters.
If your snails look like this: http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&q=nerite+snail then they'll grow to be about an inch or two to three centimeters.
If they look like this: http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&q=New+Zealand+mud+snail then they'll stay smaller than a dime.
