What can I use instead of white lead for boat building?
I found some older plans for a frame-less wooden boat. They call for white lead and string to seal the joints. What can I use instead of this and what is the string for? What's the best type of fairly inexpensive joint sealant for this type of application. I will probably use this boat in saltwater as well as fresh. Thanks!
the string is cotton caulking; when it gets wet it expands and makes the joints between the wood tighter so water doesn't get in......
in place of white lead you could use "Boatyard Bedding Compound" which is the 1950's era answer.....
or, depending on the what you're doing ( a strip plank design?) nothing beats WEST epoxy for strength and tenacity...the glue joint is stronger than the wood it's attached to.......
or you can use good ol' 5200 caulk by 3M ...available at any marine store.....once it sets it will not ever ever ever come off.......cleans up with mineral spirits....
go over to www.woodenboat.com and browse their articles, or read up on WEST epoxy
