How do you buy bath towels?
i'm moving into my first apartment and realized i need to buy bath towels. i am overwhelmed by the choices at linens and things, bed bath and beyond, and walmart.com. i want the best deal i can find for a high quality product. i don't even know what to look for. please help.
I would go for bamboo or bamboo/organic cotton blend towels. They are softer, more absorbent, and dry faster than 100% cotton towels. Land's End is one place that sells some for about $20 each.
That said, here are some other tips: A popular consumer reporting publication rates the 100% cotton Supima Classic towels by Wamsutta highest for softness and least shrinkage. They are sold at bed bath and beyond for about $15 for the bath size. Their bath size is 54" by 30".
A thinner, less expensive 100% cotton towel also rated highly by them is the $5 Martha Stewart Everyday towel from KMart. It is 49" by 28". One advantage to thinner towels is that they dry faster than the thicker towels - saving time and energy.
I have purchased some $6 bath towels from Target in vivid colors. They are med-thick, 100% cotton, and have held up well.
Some towels are less absorbent when you first buy them because they have been treated or washed with something that makes them feel soft. After you wash them several times (don't use fabric softener because it coats the fibers and makes them less absorbent.), the coating will be washed away and the towels will be more absorbent.
When you wash your towels the first few times, wash them by themselves - wash only like colors together. This is because the first few times they may bleed some of the color and also because they will probably shed some fibers. If you wash a dark towel with a light towel when it is new, you may get dark fibers stuck to the light towel, and light fibers stuck to the dark towel. They come off eventually, but it is something you want to avoid if possible.
Some department stores have very good sales on their towels several times a year.
