Finally found a lovely female tiel for our boy?
now, how long until they can get together? He has pulled A LOT of feathers, to the bare skin, and I am afraid if they disagree, she may hurt him worse. We've been told it is stress and lonely (plus he reached his first "lust" earlier this year). Should we wait a month or will letting them get "together" help with his plucking; if she picks at him or scratches him, he WILL bleed, no doubt.
Well, we threw caution to the wind and opened both cages; he went to her place and vice versa, and at dusk, they went home, alone, but he was definitely excited! She has been doing the "egg" dance, so maybe they will be okay. We have had the cages side by side for a while and they have been so cute flirting with each other, then today they ate out of each others food and water dishes, like a test, or something. I am still worried about him getting hurt, he seems so vulnerable now. Tomorrow, we shall see what happens. Thanks again!
You need to let them get acquainted first. If you just dump her into his cage he may see this as an invasion of his territory, and attack her.
If you have another cage, try sitting one bird in each cage, and sitting the cages side by side for awhile. See if it looks like they want to get together. Give them some time to get to know each other. When they look like they are getting along well, then put him into her cage. Watch them to see that there are no problems for a little while.
Our Cockateils only breed in the spring, and have been that way for years. Some people here have said that they breed all the time, but I have not seen that in over 10 years with Cockateils.
If he does not stop the feather plucking after being given some new toys and a companion ( even if she is in another cage) , you might try spraying "Bitters" on his feathers. It is supposed to stop the plucking due to the terrible taste. If you can't find it at a local bird shop, try DrsFosterSmith.com
