Why was Islamic culture more vibrant than medieval European culture during the early Medieval period?
Any ideas or notes are appreciated.
some parts of the islamic culture were more vibrant than some parts of the european culture for a simple reason- the islamic society relied on massive numbers of slaves to work- while the europeans had to work for a living
this is of course an oversimplification- but then, so is the question (not only over-simplified but also biased)
the reality is that the life of an egyptian peasant did not differ much from the life of an european peasant- both were subjected to very harsh laws (both religious and secular) and had very little use for "vibrant culture"
you could see differences in "higher places"- for example the muslim invaders of Spain constructed beautiful palaces- simply because they felt safe enough to do so.
Any European lord who would construct such a monument to vanity would have been considered crazy- simply because the reality was made of Viking or Moorish raids (to mention but a few) and the only structures worth building were fortified ones
