Roman numerals in chemistry?
Okay, so I'm learning about compounds and stuff in grade 10 chemistry.
I'm having trouble on the section that says
"Write the name for each of the following compounds"
For example,
MgI2 = Magnesium Iodide
Not sure if that's right?
Anyways,
So then you end up with these two
MoS
&
MoS2
The first one is called "Molybdenum (II) Sulfide
The second is caleld "Molybdenum (IV) Sulfide
(according to my teacher)
I don't understand this,
someone explain please?
There's another pair like that....
Ni3P2
&
NiP
and then there's just individuals such as:
Al4C3
CdCl2
HELP!?
MgI2 is magnesium iodide.
Your teacher is right about MOS and MoS2.
Ni3P2 is nickel phosphide.
I don't know what NiP is.
Al4C3 is aluminum carbide.
CdCl2 is cadmium chloride.
When you're writing formulas for chemical compunds, the sum of the charges is always equal to 0. H2O is a compound. There are 2 H atoms and each as a charge of +1. So now we have +2. O has a charge of -2. 2+(-2)=0.
The Roman numerals (like in molybdenum (II) sulfide or MoS) indicate the charge of the molecule. So, in this case, Mo has a +2 charge and S has a -2 charge. 2+(-2)=0.
Roman numerals always indicate positive charges. (II) is the same as +2, (III) is the same as +3, etc.
