I was looking for a fabric to make a twin fitted sheet, and decided that it would be more fun to piece together a bunch of smaller fabric and sew them together to make a fitted sheet. I've never made a quilt, and was hoping that I could use this "quilt-top" of patch-worked fabric pieces without any backing or borders to make a fitted sheet. Of course I planning on finishing the cut seams. Is this a bad idea?
I think this project would have too many drawbacks. I think it would fail badly in the areas of durability and comfort. You would have to have some serious seams in it to keep it from coming apart with the wear and tear, and washing that sheets require. You would indeed have to finish all those raw edges. And I think all those seams and finished edges would seriously affect the comfort of someone sleeping on it. If it were me, I would save my lovely fabric and hard work for the top of the bed.
