why do we call a porcelain dish a china work?
why do we call a porcelain dish a china work?
ceramics, pots, vases, and other things like that are called china. but why?
Because, for many, many years, the finest porcelain work came from China. China and porcelain were known synonomously.
A good analogy is the beverage called tea. Tea used to come, exclusively, from a variety of tea leaves. Now, herbs (that are not from the tea family) comprise many types of beverages called 'Tea', hence, herbal teas. There is no tea in the mix, but it's called tea to help the drinker understand that the herbs are consumed in the same way as tea leaves.
Porcelain is still called China, in part as recognition of the Chinese superiority in the manufacture of the product for such a very long time. And, in part in recognition of the process by which the porcelain is manufactured.
