Can anyone recommend a good sewing machine for me?
I have not sewed in a few years. I learned on my mom's machine, which was older (from the late '60s or early '70s). I would definitely classify myself as a beginning sewer; I have made some quilts, pajamas, poodle skirts, purses with buttons, and aprons--nothing too fancy, just looking for a basic machine that I can keep using should I want to work on intermediate and perhaps one day advanced patterns. Thanks for your help!

these would be the less costly of all the machines out there. I have a white sewing machine and it works great. I don't quilt my quilts on a machine but hand quilt instead. You can for a little more money purchase sewing machines that will also do quilting or just buy a quilting machine. You can always look on craigslist for used sewing machines but if you want to buy a new one go to your local sewing center,Joann's, on any local quilt shop. The best thing about buying a new machine is that all of these places will give you lessons and help you with any questions you have about the machine that you buy. You can also go in and try out the sewing machines before you buy. I recommend that you do this. It helps you decided which machine you feel will suite your needs and the ease and comfort. Take a quilt block in with you and actually sew on the machine or a small project that you are working on. Ask lots of questions and then decide. the only draw back on buying from craigslist or a thrift shop is you can not try out the machine because the people selling may or may not let you. Lots of the thrift shops say that you will just have to buy it to find out. Or they don't have outlets for people to plug things in or the time to stay with you. You need to know about the machine and if it is working or not.Lastly you may not get all of the extra items that normally come with the machine, feet,manual,bobbins,computer disc,etc. good Luck
