Genuine Amish quilts and Smorgarbords in Lancaster, PA?
I'm going to Lancaster in a few weeks and I was wondering where can I buy genuine Amish quilts. Tons of stores in the area claim they have Amish made quilts but for some reason I don't trust them. I'm particularly interested in places where credit cards are accepted.
Also, which is the best Smorgasbord in the area?
You are right to be suspicious. Lancaster has had huge problems with places selling "Amish" quilts that are really made overseas.
Riehl's Quilts and Crafts in Leola is reputable, and so is Smucker's quilts in New Holland. Also, Sylvia Petersheim's in Bird-in-Hand. Think twice before buying anywhere that has "Amish" in the store name, and don't be afraid to go down side roads looking for handmade signs directing you to someone's quilt shop in their house. Before buying the quilt, ask who made it. The person selling it should be able to give you at least one full name. Quilts with any applique work are not Amish made. And remember not to shop on Sunday.
Best Smorgasbord: Millers in Ronks! Shady Maple is okay, but don't go there on a weekend! All the tour buses stop there and you will wait forever to get a seat.
