Help with an antique pocket watch?
My father had a pocket watch that was his father's before him, about 40 years ago it was stolen from him and I would love to find another one just like it to give to him for Christmas because he still thinks of it often. I looked for it on Ebay but I'm a little lost and I dont know what to do. I'm not sure if this is the kind of place to get help with this but I had to at least try...I think it is: open faced, has an ivory face with some kind of rose decal, has roman numerals, I think it was purchased in France. If anyone can help me in any way to track one down I would really appreciate it!
Hi,
From the description you give you are unlikely to find another exactly like it but you can find one which though different will I am sure thrill your father.
E bay is not a bad idea-the positives are choice-the likelihood that you will pay significantly less than were you to buy from a dealer./shop.
But remember that there is always a reason for people selling an item-and that is not just because they need cash.
All 'wind up ' clocks and watches should be cleaned/serviced once a year and most on sale on e bay will not have been unless otherwise specified.
So in buying a pocket watch on the internet really means you need to factor in the cost of getting the item cleaned when you get it so as to ensure it runs well and keeps proper time.
Most on offer are solid silver and if so will be hallmarked substantiating both this and their date. The origin of the case does not necessarily co-relate with the country of origin of the movement.Often they were made/sourced independently.
Try to avoid any that have dents in the case-dents mean dropped watches or non cared for watches. If budget allows try to get a watch chain (Albert) so that your father can wear the watch as it was designed.
Check feed back from, any trader you think about bidding from and good luck in your search
