Chemistry Roman Numeral Question?
How do we know when to use Roman Numerals?
For example: How come we use a roman numerals in this equation Fe3+ and CN = Iron (III) cyanide, but not this one Sr2+ and Cl- = Strontium chloride
Think about the point of actually including the Roman numeral. The Roman numeral is there to distinguish between the names of several possible compounds of the same elements, like FeCl2 and FeCl3. They both can't be "iron chloride". If a metal only has one oxidation number then there is nothing to distinguish between and the Roman numeral is not needed.
So, if the metal can have more than one oxidation number, then include the Roman numeral (which corresponds to the oxidation number) in the name. Iron can have oxidation numbers of +2 and +3, but strontium only has one oxidation number, +2, and therefore doesn't need a Roman numeral in the name.
