Roman statues during the Flavian time period?
Any info or sites? I cant find any decent ones on sculptures
I need to know the basic similar style of that time period
Statues of the Flavian period took up the vigorous character of late Julio-Claudian art (also in painting). A lively impressionist style was combined with a solid, fully rounded shape. Flavian sculptors were interested in depicting differences in textures and appearance of hair and skin, while demonstrating their expertise as stone-cutters. Sculpture of the time resembled paintings, in fact, especially when the artist tinted the face, lips, eyes, hair with color (resemblance to the encaustic portraits from Fayum). As a result the images of Emperors and important citizens are solid looking, almost life like images. (By the end the 1st c. A D. this warmth began to fade.
e.g. A Flavian Court Beauty, marble, AD 80=90, Rome, Museo Capitolino http://penelope.uchicago.edu/~grout/encyclopaedia_romana/miscellanea/museums/flavianlady.html (also note what is written about Flavian hairstyles)
Arch of Titus (AD 90): photos(enlarge twice) at http://sights.seindal.dk/sight/179_Arch_of_Titus.html - see here feeling of a direct physical presence by great depth of the relief giving impression of a space in which real action occured. Hope this is helpful.
