What is the difference between satin, silk and taffeta?
I'm trying to choose a fabric for a wedding dress, I'm thinking of going with taffeta but I'd like to know the advantages and disadvantages of each material, including which one actually looks best...
Thanks!
Silk is a fiber, whereas satin and taffeta are weaves. Satin and taffeta can both be made from silk as well as various man-made fibers, such as acetate.
Satin is a softly drapey fabric, often quite heavy. It works well for somewhat body conscious styles that cling to the body.
Taffeta is a very stiff weave that works best in styles that flare, and is particularly good for hoopskirts and full sleeves that need to keep their shape.
As to which one looks best, it really depends on what you're trying to do with it. Do you want soft drapes? Then satin is what you want. Do you want a very full skirt or leg of mutton sleeves? Then taffeta is great for that.
If you go to your local bridal boutique, though, and ask, the salespeople will be able to show you both fabrics so that you can compare them for yourself.
