Pet oscars. Fish?
I recently purchased a 65 gall (246ltr) tank and put a medium sized oscar, lge catfish, silver shark in it. My oscar has almost annihilated the shark even though they are of a similar size. The tank seems to be cloudy even though the pH, ammonia levels are all okay. The filter I have filters the water 4 times every hour. Do I need a bigger filter?
Could someone give me some tips on how best to raise oscars? Ideal temps, foods, lighting conditions etc? He eats very little, seems to sulk alot and doesn't like the lighting on the tank.
Any advice, hints or tips on these great fish would be most appreciated.
The shark has been removed and has been treated with melafix, although it's not looking good. I had the nitrate & ammonia tested by the pet shop yesterday, and it came back good.
The Oscar is a member of the Chichlid family and originates from the Amazon River. Most fish from this region and of this family prefer a slightly acidic PH of 6.6-6.8. They require extremely clean water, with frequent water changes. I'd recommend a 25-30% water change every other week for this species. I'd assume you're having a high Nitrite problem or even possibly a high Nitrate problem. I'd recommend getting a FreshWater Master Test Kit made by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. so you can get an accurate reading of everything you need to track. The Quick Strip tests are inaccurate, from what I've experienced and for such a delicate species, you'll need precice water readings. If your NO-2 and NO-3 are high, keep changing your water until it's back to 0. Your ammonia, Nitrate and Nitrite should be at 0. Your pH should be at 6.6-6.8.
Be sure not to over feed your fish, never feed them more than they can eat in three minutes. I would recommend feeding twice a day. What are you trying to feed your Oscar? How large is it in size? I'd recommend getting some good live food, either feeder fish or maybe some brine shrimp, depending on the size of your Oscar. They like a meaty diet and are typically hardy eaters. Another thing I'd recommend is getting that poor shark out of there! The Oscar grows to be very large, quickly adapting to it's environment and can be very aggressive. I'd never recommend putting two aggressive fish in the same tank together; it's too dangerous. If your shark has complications recovering, you can use some Stress Coat enhancer to bring your shark back to health. MelaFix is also good for promoting fingrowth, which I'd imagine it needs.
