Green wax on leather gun sling?
My great grandfather gave me one of his old guns. One of the first model 700's from Remington. He handmade a leather strap for it and a bullet holster as well. On both pieces of the leather there is a green waxy substance. Is this ment to be there?
That, 'green wax' is more correctly called, 'verdigris'. It has been transferred from nearby copper or brass onto the leather where it is now growing as a fungus.
You need to get rid of it. This can be as simple as washing the affected area with either saddle soap or regular dishwashing liquid. Allow the area to dry thoroughly and then treat the entire leather piece with a leather preservative like Lexol or Ballistol.
Good luck!
