crochet question, what is better for starching?
Old fashioned sugar starch like grandma used or the new commercial starches to make shaped crochet projects stiff?
Also, what is a good material for the doily board? I used to pin tablecloths to the carpet as I stretched and blocked them. Have you used plain corrugated cardboard or a corkboard? The books recommend using a particle board coated with shellac, but I'm sure there is an easier way.
Thank you for your replies.
You can use sugar, but I've usually used starch. You can get corn starch that you use for thickening sauces in Chinese cooking (and other things) and it works well for stiffening doilies too. You have to cook it for a bit to make it get thick, then dip your material into it. Note that this is a delicious substance, like sugar, for insects, so if you have any around your place, be sure you store your starched things in a tightly closed container.
For blocking, I've also used the sheet on a carpet and it has worked well, as long as you can insert pins securely into the carpet, and that you don't need to walk over that area (or have cats). Some people have used the mattress (not waterbed). I have used office dividers where you can insert pins into the walls. You can also get some insulation boards made of blue styrofoam. Get a cover for them; you can use gingham which has the squares already marked on it! These are light-weight, and can be stored anywhere; you can use them for a very long time.
You can use cardboard, but it's usually not strong enough for the stretching I do with lace. You will need to cover the board with some plastic, since it will get soft from anything wet you put on it. The particle board is good if you do a lot of blocking, and you may need nails to pin anything down.
