Should oil be added to clay?
I'm used to working with Terracotta from my art class, but the one I have now is from my friend's school. Its pale/white/gray in color and not as "plastic". I have trouble molding and smoothing it out because it dries pretty quickly. I added some oil to a sample and it worked out pretty well.
I was wondering if its safe to add oil when the clay will be put in the kiln?
I used baby oil and I read some clay that are oil based won't dry out or be able to be fired. So far, it seems to be drying out extremely slower than usual, that's all.
if you will put it into the kiln: no. Add water.
If it is oil-based clay (plasticine) yes, you can add oil.
If you are working with water based clay use water if it starts to get dried out. the oil you add to the clay will burn off and can not only be a fire hazard but also leave soot back. If it is an electric kiln, the owners of the kiln will appreciate neither. If you used an appreciable amount of oil your clay probably will melt before the oil burns off as the oil did not evaporate before you put it into the kiln, because you basically made some kind of plasticine which will melt then burn if you heat it up. In addition if some water is still in the clay which could not evaporate through the oil your piece can explode, potentially damaging other pieces in the kiln.
I don't think it's a good idea at all. What's wrong with using water? It's cheaper and easier too! Use a spray bottle and wait until clay has soaked up the water before you continue working. Cover things completely with plastic when you are not working. You also can put a moist towel in the bag (though if you introduce too much moisture you can also destroy whatever you make).
