Bartering in Guatemala?
My husband and I are taking a trip to Guatemala in a week and we've heard that tourists are commonly overcharged for souvenirs. We want to get a decent price for some goods not overcharged but not too cheap either. For those who've travelled to Guatemala in the past, I'm curious how much these items would be: Textiles (skirts, shirts, blankets etc.), ceramic or stone mayan calendars, and masks.Thank you for your help!
If you're looking for a US dollar price, take the Quetzal price divided by 8. I can usually get a full sized blanket for Q190.00. Q200.00 is going to be a white guy or girl price, and that's fair. They'll start at Q300 in Antigua, lower in other areas. Hand woven wrap skirts you can get for between Q70 to Q80. Shirts are about the same. Masks you can get for Q40 to Q50. I've not priced the stone Mayan calendars. I know they come in Jade which is expensive and stone which is much less. Depended on the size the Jade variety will cost you somewhere around Q400 to Q800, and the stone calendars you should be able to get for less than Q100. Keep in mind that where you shop is also important. Chichicastenango has some great deals during the market days on Thursday and Saturday. Antigua and Guatemala City will have the highest prices. When negotiating your price ask what the item is worth, then ask yourself what its worth to you, make an offer just slightly lower than what it's worth. Show the cash and walk away. Don't shake your head or stand there telling the vendors "No, no, es muy caro", just make it short and sweet. They'll come after you. Just don't look or act interested. That's how I always do it and I've maybe walked away from buying something two or three times (out of hundreds) and not bought something. The only place they won't chase you is in Livingston. They just don't care there. If you're looking for some interesting things to bring back, they're selling a ton of artifacts that were dug up in Santiago right now. I've seen them all over the streets. I'm sure it must be illegal somehow to own them or bring them back to the US but I really don't know. The pieces they're selling are over 2000 years old. They're interesting to look at. Just like HijoDelSol said in his response, you get the same stuff everywhere you go. Sometimes the coastal areas will have unique artisan crafts made from shells that you can't find other places but other than that it's all about the same. I hope that helps out.
