Cleaning my Mossberg 500 12 Gauge shotgun Barrel inside help?

Hi,

I really need some help and advice. I am pretty new to Shotguns. I have a 12 gauge that says 3/4" to 3" (inches) bore size for shells.

Does that mean i need to buy a 3/4" to 3" cleaning brush to clean the inside of my barrel and my Magazine Barrel?

I have alot of residue and even some paint inside the barrels that's effecting the action.

Also if i use a brush inside the barrel do i have to put a cloth over it? I was just going to use the Hard Thistles on the brush by it's self to clean the inside good. I just don't know what to search for the right size brush.

Sorry for all these questions, But i really need help.

All answers appraeciated. Thanks alot,

Andrew.

K. First off it says 2 3/4" to 3". That means the size of shotshells you can use are either 2 3/4" long as well as the 3" long magnum shotshells. The size of cleaning tool you should be using is just a 12 gauge specific cleaning tool. Do not use things with steel bristles just because you probably have a chrome lined barrel. There are many things that you can use to clean your shotgun. I would recommend buying a 12 gauge cleaning kit from a sporting goods store. Hoppes no .9 is good. The kit should come with a rod as well as a brush attachment and another attachment that holds cleaning patches soaked in the provided solvent. It should also come with oil to lubricate the action as well as prevent rusting in the barrel. You can also buy things like "cleaning ropes" which are just thick soft ropes that you slide through your barrel. These should only be used to provide a quick clean immediately after shooting, don't use them as a replacement for a thorough cleaning with solvent and oil.
