what can i use besides starch to make a stiff shell with tissue paper?
theres a project i found online that uses balloons and small torn pieces of tissue paper that are adhered to the balloon and then you pop the balloon. it says to liquid laundry starch or the starch powder that is mixed into water. it is layered with the tissue paper for about 3 layers.
i need a hard shell so that when sealed it can be broken or at least torn open and will still allow it to release the balloon.
We do a project similar to this with children at our local community center. We have used starch in the past, but actually prefer using regular Elmer's White Glue mixed with a bit of water. Just pour some White Glue into a container, then slowly add water until you have the consistency of whole milk. Dip the pieces of tissue paper into the glue/water mixture, then press onto the balloon. If you have remaining water/glue mixture leftover, just seal the container and store it in the refrigerator - it can be used again. If you prefer not to store leftovers, make sure to throw away the glue/water mixture in the trash - not down the drain.
