Do I use a drapery weight or an upholstery weight fabric? And how do I tell which is which? Should it be polyester, cotton, linen or what? I want something cute, but I just had a baby so I thought a slipcovered sofa would be best.
You can use a heavy drapery fabric or a lightish upholstery fabric. You just want something sturdy that won't be too hard to sew on the machine you have and that will fit and hang nicely. The heavy upholstery fabrics will be too stiff. I would stay away from linen as it will wrinkle. Most things you see at the fabric store will probably be some sort of blend. Go to the racks where they have the very wide 'Decorating' fabrics and you should be able to find something appropriate.
