How did the Vikings use the polarizing mineral cordierite for navigation at sea?
When clouds hid the sun, the Vikings could use cordierite to find the approximate position of the sun. Where can I get some cordierite to try it out? (I think the Vikings called it a sun-stone.)
Cordierite is also known as iolite. Check local mineral suppliers for samples.
As you turn the crystal in relation to the sun, it changes colour. As each crystal is a bit different, you have to 'calibrate' your crystal by trying it out on a day when you can clearly see the sun before using it on cloudy days.
