Best Way toStore a Camera Lens when not using?

If I am not currently using a particular lens, for my 35mm camera, what is the best way to store it?

1. With the Front and Back lens caps on, securely on a shelf, so air can circulate around it in the open

2. Securely stored in an air and light tight canister with the caps
on the lens

It seems that option 2 might have some potential for moisture to build up inside the closed case somehow.

Thanks Danny

I always just make sure both caps are securely on, and leave them in a convenient place. If they're too closed up, it will take too long to use it if the right shot comes up (which they always seem to do when I have a different lens mounted on my camera.) You can keep them in a camera bag, in a separate compartment or a soft case. I've noticed Nikon lenses now come with a soft case, which is nice!

If you're worried about moisture, try to keep them away from windows and out of the sun. Never store them in a garage, basement or attic. Room temperature with normal to low humidity is best.
