I wash wool all the time. Wool gets smelly when it is wet; that's the nature of wool. Just like a dog stinks when it's fur gets wet. If it is still smelly after it's dry, you probably left it too long, in a damp condition. Rewash it (cold water only) with a mild detergent (just a small amount of detergent), on gentle (always use gentle for blankets or you can tear them). After the cycle is done, spin the blanket again (turn the wash setting to spin). That will get excess water out. Then put the blanket in the dryer on permanent press for just half an hour (to remove wrinkles and some of the dampness). Then air dry the blanket the rest of the way. Put it outside so the wind and sun can dry it (if you live in a foggy, wet place, just dry it in the dryer).
If you wash wool items, they tend to shrink, but a slightly shrunken blanket is no problem. Washing clothes made of wool can mean you can't wear them any longer (they tend to shrink drastically in the dryer, or if washed in warm water).
I own a few wool blankets, and wash them regularly.
