How is making your own Hummus cheaper when Tahini is so expensive?
They only sell one size of Tahini at our supermarket and it costs $8. It is a rather large container about the size of a normal jar of peanut butter. How long does Tahini last after it is opened? What else can you do with it? IDK how making your own would be cheaper for me when I normally go through 2 small containers of Hummus in a week. That is only about $7-8, less or the same as just the Tahini.
Hummus recipes generally call for around 1-2 T. of tahini. I could get between 15 and 30 batches of hummus out of a normal-sized can of tahini. That adds up to around 25-50 cents each batch I make. You'll also need to buy a can of garbanzo beans. Let's say that will cost you about $1.50. Chances are that you already have olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic laying around, so no extra cost there. The only other special ingredient you might need is a lemon. They're 99 cents for a big one where I live. So, the cost of one batch of hummus for you will probably wind up being about $3. It will make at least as much as you're currently eating for half the cost.
As for the shelf life, it lasts pretty much forever. I have never had tahini go bad (we always use it first). If you're making tahini weekly, you'll have no problems at all.
